What is APA Format?

APA (American Psychological Association) format is the most widely used citation style in the social sciences, education, business, and nursing. The 7th edition, published in 2019, introduced significant updates to how sources are cited, including new guidelines for citing digital content, AI-generated text, and online media.

APA format requires two types of citations: in-text citations that appear in the body of your paper, and reference list entries that appear on a separate page at the end. Our free citation generator handles both automatically.

Why Use Our APA Citation Generator?

Manual citation formatting is time-consuming and error-prone. Our tool eliminates common mistakes by automatically applying APA 7th edition rules to your sources. Key features include:

  • Auto-fill from URL or DOI: Paste a link and we extract the metadata for you.
  • 25+ source types: From websites and books to podcasts, AI content, and legal cases.
  • In-text citations: Both parenthetical and narrative formats generated automatically.
  • Bibliography management: Add multiple sources and export as plain text, BibTeX, or Word.
  • 9,000+ styles: While APA is the default, switch to MLA, Chicago, Harvard, or thousands of other styles.

APA 7th Edition Key Changes

The 7th edition brought several important changes from the 6th edition:

  • Publisher location is no longer required for books.
  • Up to 20 authors can be listed (previously capped at 7).
  • DOIs are formatted as URLs (https://doi.org/...).
  • "Retrieved from" is no longer used before URLs.
  • New source types including social media, podcasts, and AI-generated content.
  • Singular "they" is endorsed as a gender-neutral pronoun.
